As the rain falls from heaven I’m lost in your love
Your overwhelming Jesus
And were walking together holding hands
Oh it’s just you and me Jesus
Life is good hear food is growing
On the beautiful branches
There is rest and there is peace
Inside the shade of your garden
Jesus your the only one for me
There’s no way I’m leaving you
Your the love the way the life the truth
Your the door I’m walking through
Angels are lifting songs of praise
Oh there just singing your story
And nothing can take me away from this place
Lord I’m just lost in your glory
Your love is the reason that I am here
And I’m running to you cause your all I need
Jesus your the only one for me
There’s no way I’m leaving you
Your the love the way the life the truth
Your the door I’m walking through

“So Jesus said to them again, ‘Truly, truly I say to you, I am the door of the sheep…I am the door; if anyone enters through Me, he will be saved, and will go in and out and find pasture.’” John 10.7, 9, NASB
In 1996 our church added a new discipleship wing that flanks our sanctuary. This two story extension of our buildings added 8 adult Sunday School rooms and a new children’s wing and nursery. It also included two stairwells and an elevator. In one stairwell there is a door at the midway landing that has brought more questions to me than any other feature of our buildings.
For those of you who are not familiar with our buildings, please allow me to describe this door. The base of the stairs rests across the hallway from the elevator and extend away from the elevator toward the exterior wall that is the rear of our church building. There is a landing on this exterior wall where to which the stairs ascend and then complete their upward trek in the opposite direction. Roughly 2/3 of the stairs are on the lower ascent.
The door in question does not sit on the landing, rather it is about 18 inches above the landing. It is a full sized solid wood door with a locking handle on it. I will admit that in my first few trips on this stairway, I had my own questions about this door. More than anything else I receive the question, “Where does that door lead?” or some variation of the like.
There is a small closet behind this door. Mystery solved, right? The door doesn’t lead anywhere. The door doesn’t conceal any clandestine ambiguity. I frankly do not even know why there is a closet there.
Today and tomorrow take us into a beautiful passage of John 10 and contain two of the “I Am” statements. Today focuses on the Door. Doors serve two purposes: access and security. A door gives you access to something. You go through the door or you open the door. What is behind the door is accessible through the door. When inside, there is security behind the door. Enter your home and you lock the door for security. You close a safe and the door provides security, right?
Remember in Genesis 6 that Noah built an ark? That ark had one way in and one way out. Anyone behind the door was safe. The ones who went through the door had access to that security.
Jesus is our access to God. He is the door. Jesus is our security in God. We go through Him to find the safety and peace that He alone can offer.
Pray: Thank You, Jesus for opening up the treasure of heaven for us. I am secure in You. I have access to God through You. Help me rest in You today.
